What Is the Divine Feminine? Exploring the Symbolism of Sacred Fire, Ancient Forests, and Ascension

Hi! I'm Naïma a professional artist from south of France. My work is inspired by the beauty of nature, ancient symbolism,feminine energy and the universal journey of healing, inviting each viewer to find their own meaning within every painting.
Symbols have always helped us understand what words alone cannot express and that's why I have always loved them and used them intuitively in my art.
Across civilizations, people have looked to nature; the elements, water, air, fire, earth, trees, rivers, mountains, and the changing seasons to make sense of transformation, loss, renewal, and the mystery of being alive.
Although cultures interpreted these symbols in different ways, certain themes appear again and again:

These symbols have inspired artists, poets, philosophers, and spiritual traditions for thousands of years.

Rather than illustrating a single mythology or belief system, Ascension brings together symbols that to me connect deeply to women and the feminine energy... Ancient trees like redwoods, the fire, the wolf and white birds...
It is my artistic reflection on what it means to let go of what no longer serves us while remaining deeply rooted in who we are.
What Is the Divine Feminine?
The term Divine Feminine has become increasingly common in modern spirituality, but it does not refer to one specific religion or historical tradition.
Instead, it is an umbrella term used to describe feminine qualities of the sacred that appear throughout history in many different forms.
Ancient civilizations honoured goddesses such as Isis in Egypt, Inanna in Mesopotamia, Demeter in Greece, and Brigid in Celtic traditions.
In Hindu philosophy, Shakti represents the dynamic creative energy of the universe.
Within Christianity, many people find echoes of the feminine through figures such as Mary or through the personification of Divine Wisdom, known as Sophia.
Although these traditions are distinct, they often celebrate qualities associated with nurturing, creativity, intuition, wisdom, fertility, compassion, and the cycles of life.
Today, many people use the phrase Divine Feminine not to refer to a particular deity but to describe these qualities within themselves, regardless of gender.
What Does Sacred Fire Symbolize?
Fire is one of humanity's oldest and most enduring symbols.
It gives warmth, light, and protection, yet it also has the power to consume. Perhaps because of this dual nature, fire appears in countless myths and spiritual traditions as a symbol of purification, transformation, illumination, and renewal.
In ancient Greece, the phoenix became a symbol of rebirth through fire. In Hindu rituals, fire remains central to ceremonies that mark important transitions in life.
In many Indigenous traditions around the world, fire is a place for storytelling, prayer, and community. Candles continue to symbolize remembrance, hope, and sacred presence across many faiths.
Although interpretations differ, a common thread emerges: fire often marks a passage from one state to another.
When I painted Ascension or my painting Wild Embers I was drawn to this symbolism not because fire erases the past, but because it reminds us that transformation is part of life.
Why Have Forests Been Considered Sacred?
Long before temples were built, many cultures regarded forests as sacred places.
Ancient woodlands were places of silence, mystery, healing, and initiation. The Celts revered sacred groves. In Japan, Shinto traditions honour forests as places where the presence of the divine can be felt.
Across many Indigenous cultures, forests are understood not simply as resources but as living communities deserving of respect.
Trees themselves have become powerful symbols. Their roots reach into the earth while their branches stretch toward the sky, making them enduring images of connection between the physical and the spiritual.
An ancient forest reminds us that life unfolds over generations rather than moments. It asks for patience. It teaches resilience. It invites humility.
As an artist, my work is inspired by the timeless symbolism of nature and the qualities often associated with the Divine Feminine—intuition, resilience, compassion, and transformation.
Through each painting, I explore the stories told by fire, forests, water, and the changing seasons, inviting viewers to find their own connection with these enduring symbols.
My hope is that my art offers a moment of reflection, wonder, and a deeper appreciation for both nature and our own journey through life.
