Les Illuminations — French Floral Art
Inspired by Poetry
by Naïma Namaste
Flower Bouquet paintings inspired by Arthur Rimbaud "Les Illuminations".
My love for Arthur Rimbaud began when I was a young girl at collège (junior high) in France...
I remember being captivated by his poetry : its rebellion, its longing for freedom, its wildness and its extraordinary talent to turn words into breathtaking poems. There was something in the way he played with words, transformed feelings into images and explored the relationship between human beings and the natural world that spoke to me deeply. His poems seemed to hold a world where imagination could run free, where nature was alive with meaning, and where beauty could be both tender and untamed.
As I grew older, my connection to his work only deepened. I returned to his poems again and again, discovering new layers of meaning and finding in them a reflection of my own sensitivity, my love of nature and my fascination with the feminine. I was especially drawn to Sensation, L'Éternité and Ophélie — poems that, each in its own way, evoke freedom, the sensuality of the natural world, the mystery of existence and the delicate relationship between beauty and life.
In 2021, when I began creating my very first artistic portfolio, I knew I wanted to pay tribute to this lifelong source of inspiration. I took an old book containing Rimbaud's poetry and carefully cut out pages from some of my favourite poems. I began incorporating these fragments into my canvases, allowing his words to become part of the paintings themselves.
From there, Les Illuminations began to take shape: a collection of five floral paintings, created through a blend of abstraction, realism and collage. Flowers became my way of expressing what Rimbaud's poetry had awakened in me ; a feeling of freedom, joy, sensuality and wonder at being alive.
For me, these paintings are also an expression of our connection with Mother Nature, and of the feminine as something deeply rooted in the natural world: beautiful, changing, instinctive and free. They celebrate life in all its colours, its fragility and its wild, untamed beauty.
Les Illuminations is more than my first collection. It is a meeting between the poet who moved me as a young girl and the artist I was beginning to become ; a tribute to the words that stayed with me, the beauty that surrounds us, and the freedom to express what lives within.
Through these five paintings, I invite you into a world where flowers become poetry, poetry becomes colour, and art becomes a celebration of life.

"Coming Home"
There is beauty in softening,
in letting the light come in,
in loosening the grip on what was,
and making room for what may be.
Like flowers opening to the sun,
we learn that strength need not be hard,
that tenderness is not weakness,
and that healing begins
when we allow ourselves to bloom.
Slowly, gently,
we return to the quiet beauty
of simply being.
