Understanding Realism in Art
Realism emerged in the 19th century as a reaction against romanticized and idealized subjects. Realist artists chose to depict life truthfully; focusing on accurate anatomy, natural light, and authentic human presence.
In portraiture, realism allows the viewer to connect deeply with the subject. The eyes feel alive. The expression feels grounded. The figure feels embodied.
Realism anchors a painting in truth.
When I paint women or animals, I choose realism for this reason. Presence matters. The soul must feel tangible. But what I love the most is getting lost in the background where I lose myself in atmosphere and let my impressionist style take shape. Naïma

Understanding Impressionism
Later in the 19th century, Impressionism transformed the art world.
Rather than focusing on sharp detail, impressionist painters explored light, atmosphere, and fleeting moments.
Brushstrokes became visible. Edges softened. Backgrounds dissolved into color and movement.
Artists like Claude Monet were less concerned with perfect form and more interested in capturing how a scene felt.
Impressionism freed painting from rigidity. It allowed emotion to enter the canvas.

Art has always lived in the space between what we see and what we feel.
As a French oil painter working in the intersection of Realism and Impressionism, I often get asked: What exactly is Impressionist Realism?
It is not a rigid historical movement with a single definition. It is a dialogue between two ways of seeing.
Realism gives us structure: the human face, the quiet truth of a portrait, the presence of a subject grounded in detail. It allows the viewer to recognize themselves in the painting.

Impressionism gives us atmosphere : the way light dissolves edges, the way color moves, the way emotion exists beyond precision. It reminds us that life is not only form but feeling. That's exaclty what I wished to translate into my latest mermaid painting "Au Clair de Lune" you can see above.
Claude Monet, my favorite artist and greatest inspiration, transformed painting by showing that a scene could be truthful without being literal. He opened a door to me, he made me believe that anything is possible.
Well, Impressionist Realism lives in this space.
It honors the subject with clarity, while surrounding it with emotional depth.
I paint women portraits, animals with realism, but allows nature and the background to breathe with impressionistic expression.
For me, this style reflects also the feminine duality I often explore in my work: strength and softness, presence and fluidity, the wild and the grounded.
It is a way of seeing the world as it is, and as it feels.
So what is Impressionist Realism? Well I see it as realism with a soul. Impressionism with a foundation. A meeting point between truth and emotion.
